What Should You Say If Your Neighbours Ask to Use Your Skip?

Skip Waste

Having a skip on your drive can be seen as an opportunity to dispose of waste - in some cases this waste might not be able to be collected by the skip hire company. Here at United Junk, we highlight a few reasons why it's bad for someone else to put rubbish in your skip.

Who is Responsible for Skip Waste?

Once the skip has been delivered it is your responsibility and that includes what waste goes in it. Fly tipping is common and if someone dumps their waste in your skip they could be fined if you have proof such as from CCTV footage.

Additional Costs

As you are the one who hired the skip then you need to keep a watchful eye on it and make sure no unwanted items find their way in there. If there is anything that the skip hire company does not dispose of then you could face additional charges.

How to Stop Others From Using Your Skip

There are a few things you can do to stop people from disposing of their waste in your skip and while not everything that goes in it will be hazardous, they would still need your permission to use it.

The first thing you can do is talk to your neighbours and let them know you’re going to be hiring and using a skip. Should there be enough space left after you have finished then you could ask them if they have any acceptable waste to go in it.

Another way to stop people disposing of their waste in your skip is to put it on your driveway as opposed to the roadside.

Doing so means they will not be able to stop as easily and with many homes having CCTV it should be a big enough deterrent.

Lastly, you can cover the skip with a tarpaulin that can be tied down which again will prevent fly tippers from trying to sneakily use it for their own benefits.

Report Fly Tipping

If you are a victim of fly tipping or have a neighbour that has not asked your permission before disposing of their waste in your skip, then they can be reported to your local authority.
