Summer Decluttering and Renovation: Which Skip Size Do You Need?

Summer is one of the best times of year to tackle those jobs you have been putting off. Longer days and better weather make it easier to work through rooms, clear out garages, or push ahead with a renovation project. Whether you are a homeowner wanting to free up space or a landlord preparing a property between tenancies, getting rid of accumulated junk is far more manageable when you have the right skip in place.

This guide covers practical tips for decluttering and renovating your home this summer, along with clear advice on choosing the right skip size from United Junk.

Why Summer is the Right Time to Clear Out

There are a few practical reasons why summer works well for a clear-out or renovation. School holidays mean families often have more time at home to sort through rooms together. Dry weather means items can be moved outside temporarily while you work through a space. Landlords with void periods between tenancies also benefit from using the summer months to refresh a property and address any build-up of left-behind items.

The key is to plan ahead. A skip on your driveway or roadside gives you a central point to dispose of everything as you work through each area, rather than making repeated trips to the tip or letting bags pile up outside.

Tips for Decluttering Your Home

A clear plan makes any declutter more efficient. Before you book a skip, consider the following:

  • Work room by room - Trying to clear an entire house at once can feel overwhelming. Start with one room, complete it, then move on. This also helps you gauge how much space you actually need in your skip.
  • Sort before you load - Separate items into categories: keep, donate, and dispose. Only items you are genuinely disposing of should go into the skip.
  • Break down large items - Dismantling furniture before loading it saves a significant amount of space and allows you to fit more into the same skip.
  • Heavy items go in first - Place heavier materials such as rubble, tiles or broken furniture at the bottom. Lighter bags and loose waste can fill the gaps on top.
  • Do not overfill - Skips must be filled level to the top edge. Overfilling results in additional charges, so if you are generating more waste than expected, it may be worth considering a larger size or a second collection.

Which Skip Size Do You Need?

United Junk offers five standard skip sizes, each suited to different types of projects. Choosing the right one from the start saves money and avoids delays.

2 Yard Skip - £125

Holds roughly 25-35 bin bags. This is the right choice for a single-room tidy-up, a small garage clear-out, or a minor garden job. If you are clearing a studio flat or removing clutter from one area only, the 2 yard skip is a cost-effective option.

3 Yard Skip - £144

Holds roughly 35-45 bin bags. A good fit for one-bedroom flat clear-outs, slightly larger garden clearances, or a small bathroom strip-out. If your project covers more than one room but is not a full renovation, this size offers solid capacity at a reasonable price.

3.5 Yard Skip - £168

Holds roughly 35-45 bin bags with more loading flexibility than the 3 yard. This size works well when a 3 yard feels tight but a 4 yard seems more than you need. It is a practical middle-ground for mid-sized domestic clear-outs.

4 Yard Skip - £192

Holds roughly 45-55 bin bags. This is the most versatile skip in the range and the most popular choice for home renovations. It suits kitchen or bathroom renovations, two-room clear-outs, decking removal, or a garage with a significant amount of accumulated junk. If you are unsure between the 3.5 and 4 yard, United Junk recommends going with the 4 yard - the extra capacity for a small price difference is usually worth it.

8 Yard Skip - £288

Holds roughly 75-85 bin bags. The largest skip in the range, this is designed for full house clearances, large-scale renovation projects, or jobs where waste will build up over several days. If you are a landlord clearing an entire property, or a homeowner undertaking a full refurbishment, the 8 yard skip provides the space to handle everything in one hire period.

Same-Day Skip Hire - Available Where Possible

If your project timeline moves faster than expected, United Junk offers same-day skip delivery where possible. This is particularly useful during summer renovation projects, where a trade team may clear materials faster than anticipated. To secure same-day availability, it is best to call early. The team can be reached on 0161 494 5557 or 07435 977065, Monday to Friday 7 am-6 pm and Saturday 7 am-2 pm.

Permits, Surcharges and What You Can Dispose Of

If your skip needs to be placed on a public road or pavement rather than a private driveway, United Junk will arrange the necessary council permit on your behalf for an additional fee of £42 including VAT.

Skips can accept general household waste, garden waste, building materials, scrap wood and metal, and furniture. Some items such as mattresses (£10 each), white goods like washing machines and fridges (£25 each) and tyres (£10 each) carry surcharges due to specialist disposal requirements. Items that cannot be accepted include asbestos, gas bottles and food waste. If you are unsure whether a specific item can go in the skip, call the team before loading.

Responsible Waste Disposal

United Junk operates a zero-to-landfill policy. All waste collected is processed at their modern recycling facility in Bredbury, Stockport, where materials are sorted, recycled and disposed of in line with government guidelines. Hiring a skip through United Junk means your summer clear-out is handled responsibly, without contributing unnecessarily to landfill.
