Decluttering and Renovating Your Home This Summer: A Skip Hire Guide for Homeowners and Landlords

Summer is one of the best times of year to tackle those long-overdue home projects. Whether you are clearing out years of accumulated clutter, stripping out an old kitchen, or getting a rental property back up to scratch between tenancies, having a reliable waste removal solution in place makes the whole process far more manageable. Skip hire is one of the most practical and cost-effective ways to get the job done - and United Junk has been helping homeowners and landlords across Stockport and Greater Manchester do exactly that since 2011.

Why Summer Is the Right Time to Act

Longer days and drier weather make summer ideal for indoor and outdoor clear-outs alike. You can move furniture and bulky items outside more easily, garden waste is at its peak, and renovation projects tend to move faster when you are not battling the elements. For landlords, the summer period often aligns with tenant changeovers, making it a natural window to refresh and clear a property before the next occupant moves in.

The key to making the most of this time is having a plan - and sorting your waste disposal before you start, not after.

Tips for a Successful Home Declutter

Before booking a skip, it helps to have a clear idea of what you are working with. Here are some practical steps to get started:

  • Go room by room - Tackling one room at a time prevents the job from feeling overwhelming and helps you track progress more easily.
  • Sort into categories - Separate items into keep, donate and dispose. Only items going into the skip need to occupy your hired space.
  • Think about bulky items first - Old furniture, carpets, broken appliances and garden waste tend to take up the most room. Identifying these early helps you choose the right skip size.
  • Do not leave it all to the last day - Skip hire from United Junk is available for up to seven days as standard, so you have time to work at a steady pace without rushing.

Choosing the Right Skip Size

One of the most common questions customers ask is which skip size they need. United Junk offers a clear range of options to suit jobs of every scale:

  • 2 yard skip - £125 - Holds roughly 25-35 bin bags. Ideal for a single-room tidy, a small garden clear-out or a studio flat with minimal waste.
  • 3 yard skip - £144 - Holds around 35-45 bin bags. A good choice for one-bed flat clear-outs, slightly larger garden clearances or a small bathroom rip-out.
  • 3.5 yard skip - £168 - Also around 35-45 bin bags, but with a little more breathing room. Useful when a 3-yard feels too tight but a 4-yard seems like too much.
  • 4 yard skip - £192 - Holds 45-55 bin bags and is the most versatile option. Suitable for kitchen or bathroom renovations, two-room clear-outs or a well-stocked garage. If you are unsure between a 3.5 and a 4 yard, the 4-yard is generally worth the small additional cost.
  • 8 yard skip - £288 - Holds 75-85 bin bags. The right choice for full house clearances, large renovation projects or jobs where waste will build up across several days.

All prices include VAT. Skips must be filled level to the top - overfilling will incur extra charges. If your skip needs to be placed on a public road or pavement, United Junk will arrange the necessary council permit for an additional £42 including VAT.

Advice for Landlords

Void periods are costly. Every day a property sits empty between tenancies is money left on the table. Getting a rental home cleared, cleaned and ready quickly is a priority - and skip hire is one of the most efficient tools available for doing that.

For a studio or one-bed flat left in reasonable condition, a 2 or 3-yard skip is usually sufficient. For larger properties or those left with significant amounts of furniture and rubbish, a 4 or 8-yard skip will give you the space you need without having to arrange multiple collections.

United Junk offers same-day skip hire where possible, which is particularly useful when a property needs to be turned around at short notice. Call early in the day to secure same-day availability.

What Can Go in the Skip?

United Junk skips accept a wide range of household and renovation waste, including general household rubbish, garden waste, timber and scrap wood, metal, furniture, carpets and flooring, and construction materials such as bricks and tiles.

Some items require specialist disposal and carry a surcharge - these include mattresses (£10 each), tyres (£10 each) and white goods such as washing machines and fridges (£25 each). Items that cannot be placed in a skip include asbestos, gas bottles and food waste. If you are not sure about a specific item, call United Junk before loading and the team will be happy to advise.

Responsible Waste Disposal

United Junk operates a zero-to-landfill policy. All waste collected is taken to their modern recycling facility in Bredbury, where a dedicated picking station sorts and processes materials to government guidelines. Choosing United Junk means your summer clear-out is handled as responsibly as possible.
